August is one of the best months to explore Karelia joining a package tour or on your own. Day temperatures are not as high as in July, which makes tours to Kizhi, Valaam, and Solovki more comfortable.
Water is still warm enough to enjoy kayaking in the beautiful Onego and Ladoga, the largest lakes in Europe, and rafting in Karelian rapid rivers. Short sunset kayaking is specially popular in August offering a stunning variety of colors of the setting sun reflecting on the water.
August also brings the first auroras. The nights are dark enough and often cloudless making this nature phenomenon visible.
